Going green is no easy task. It’s a culmination of small efforts that make a big impact on our surroundings. And this is exactly what we aim for at the Royal St Andrews Hotel in Port Alfred: we offer our guests an indulgent experience in 4* star hospitality with luxurious rooms and amenities, while lowering the impact we have on our environment.

Through eco-friendly policies, we are able to put positive changes forward, focusing on reducing waste and energy usage, and lowering landfill amounts.

We urge all our guests to mindfully indulge and experience all the luxurious comforts our Hotel has to offer in Port Alfred.

The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved. – Richard Rogers

We’ve highlighted a few of the changes we’ve put in place to encourage ‘green’ travelling:

  • A Saflock keycard system which allows guests to switch on lights in each room, only while the keycard is holder. This lowers electricity usage by turning the lights off when a guests leaves his or her room during the day.
  • All drinks throughout the hotel are served with biodegradable straws to lower our trash sent to landfill.
  • The living walls in the modern wing help to preserve clean air.
  • All toiletries supplied in rooms are Cruelty-Free and eco-friendly.
  • Vegan and vegetarian meals feature on all menus.
  • Following Fair Trade principles, we procure a large amount of produce locally.
  • We employ locally as far as possible.
  • A custom-designed micro irrigation system helps conserve water throughout the gardens and hotel landscape.
  • Water is processed through a reverse osmosis system.

Did you know that a plastic straw can take up to 200 years to decompose?

Tips for staying with us:

  1. Remember to unplug the hairdryer once you’ve dried your hair. This can save a significant amount of energy.

  2. Switch off the air-conditioner when leaving your room for long periods of time.

  3. If staying for a few days, consider using the same bath towel for a few days before leaving it in the tub for replacement by housekeeping.

  4. No need to worry about the lights when leaving your room – your Saflock card will turn them off automatically when you leave with your card.
