MARTIN & LINDA BEKKER OF THE ROYAL ST ANDREWS HOTEL IN PORT ALFRED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST OF SOUTHERN AFRICA RECEIVE TOP SUNSHINE COAST TOURISM AWARD FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO BUILDING TOURISM IN THE REGION
Martin and Linda Bekker, owners of the Royal St Andrews Hotel in Port Alfred, have been awarded the Sunshine Coast Tourism Award for their outstanding contribution to tourism in the area. The award, in the form of a floating trophy, was announced last night at the Annual General Meeting of Sunshine Coast Tourism, in collaboration with the Port Alfred Business Forum.
Port Alfred is located at the heart of the extensive Sunshine Coast region of Southern Africa, which stretches from East London in the north, southwards through Port Elizabeth to Jeffrey’s Bay. The award event took place at The Royal St Andrews Hotel on Thursday 29 September 2018.
The Sunshine Coast Tourism Award recognises the significant investment made by Martin and Linda in the Royal St Andrews Hotel and in the region. In addition, the award recognises the international exposure and impact that a R5 million sponsorship over 5 years granted by Martin and Linda Bekker to the Amanzi Festival is having on the town, it people and its economy.
This headline sponsorship has enabled the Port Alfred based organisers and the town to host the first ever World Surf League International QS1000 Town Classic long and short board mens and ladies surfing competition and, the APB Body Boarding competition. Held on the beautiful beaches of Port Alfred, The Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival includes an 8km trail run, river mile swimming, inflatable boat races, jet ski races as well as a range of beach sporting events.
The inaugural event took place during the Easter period earlier this year. As an annual and truly international event, the next festival will take place in Port Alfred from 19th to 28th April 2019.
Said Sandy Birch, manager of Sunshine Coast Tourism; “The impact of what Martin and Linda are doing is phenomenal. The inaugural international Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival that took place during Easter this year, could not have happened without the generous sponsorship from Martin and Linda. For the first time in many years, the number of visitors to Port Alfred during Easter this year was at the same levels that Port Alfred experiences during the annual peak Christmas and December holiday period. This is real tourism growth of a grand scale, for which Martin and Linda have been recognised.”
