Let’s meet at the Highlander

The Highlander captures the atmosphere and spirit of traditional homely Scottish pubs which cater for the whole family. There is great food, beverages and – most importantly – a warm welcome.

In winter months two flickering fires keep the pub cosy, while on warm summer days guests sit outside under the branches of coral trees for long lazy get-togethers with family and friends.

All the dishes on the wide-ranging menu have a unique Highlander twist. Favourites include the Highlander Burger, Fish and Chips, Eisbein, Surf and Turf, and Salmon Linguine. By far the most popular item is Our Fish and Chips with its unique Coin Ale batter. ( Coin Ale is a Craft beer only brewed in Port Alfred.

For the lovers of the hot & spicy there are kamikaze fries – potatoes like you’ve never had before.


 

Desserts include Malva Pudding, Walnut Truffle and New York Baked Cheesecake.

For younger guests, there is a Highlander children’s menu, as well as a child care facilities at the Royal St. Andrews Hotel available over weekends and most school holidays.

In keeping with the laid-back atmosphere, reservations are not taken, and seating is on a first come first served basis.


 

Whatever the weather or occasion the Highlander is just the place to savour three of the locally produced craft beers. The Highlander Lager is prepared specially for the pub, for every Highlander Lager sold, R2 is donated to The Wilderness Foundation, so we urge you to have one more!

Then there is the Kowie Gold Pilsner and the Coin Ale with its slight caramel taste and smooth finish.

There is also a wide selection of wines, with the Highlander sharing the Thistle Restaurant’s Diners Club Platinum Award-winning wine list, as well as range of eminently quaffable South African favourites.


 

Of course, no pub can claim to be Scottish without a selection of premier whiskies. The Highlander is the only pub in Port Alfred to offer rare whiskies such as Glenmorangie Nectar D’or, 12 year old Glenlivet, and Johnnie Walker Double Black.

For those of the Irish and American persuasion the selection includes Tullamore Dew, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Jack Daniels, Gentleman Jack and South Africa’s own Three Ships.

There is also a choice of premium brand cognacs that no other pub in Port Alfred has on its shelves. Brandy connoisseurs can savour Hennessy, Bisquet VSOP and Remy Martin.


The Highlander Pub is open from 10 in the morning until late at night,
and the kitchen is open from 12:00 to 21:30.

 

A generator keeps the lights on and the conversation,
food and drinks flowing whenever there is a power cut.
